About

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a holistic form of primary care medicine that combines the scientific concepts of western clinical assessment and diagnosis, with the deeply rooted concepts of traditional medical wisdom.  It is founded on the following principles:

First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)

The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)

Identify and Treat the Cause (Tolle Causam)

Treat the Whole Person (Tolle Totum)

Doctor as Teacher (Docere)

Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Preventio)

Naturopathic physicians (NDs) receive their specialized training from one of six accredited naturopathic colleges in North America.  Prior to attending a 4 year full-time program at a naturopathic college, they must complete at least 3 years of pre-medical sciences in an undergraduate degree.   In addition to their intensive medical training, NDs must complete two sets of NPLEX licensing exams (after 2nd and 4th year) - the standard examination used by all licensing jurisdictions in North America.  In Canada, the following provinces are licensed for the practice of naturopathic medicine: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Nova Scotia.
